science-related research needs.
Search 1:
A student wants to write a report outlining the use of DNA in forensic investigations.
Solution:
- Choose "DNA" from Topic List
- Narrow topic by using the Subject Guide in the far left-hand column
- A wealth of terms containing "DNA," including "DNA Fingerprinting," which notes a see reference to "DNA Identification" will appear.
- Select "DNA Identification"
- All 6 tabs are populated allowing students to easily identify between types of content
Search 2:
Find a simple explanation formula for the Pythagorean Theorem
Solution:
- Open Science Resource Center, enter "Pythagorean Theorem" in the "Enter search term(s)" box
- Select "Subject Search" and click on the "Search" button
- Sort by "Content Level" under the "Reference" tab
- Select the first article from the U·X·L Encyclopedia of Science
Search 3:
Student must find scholarly research on the genetic link for diabetes
Solution:
- Type genetic diseases diabetes in the Search box
- Click on the Search button
- Choose the "Academic Journals" tab
- Your results will be displayed in reverse chronological order
Search 4:
Need a biography and commentary on Albert Einstein's influences
Solution:
- Click on the Person Search button located in the top navigation bar
- Type Albert Einstein" in the name box
- Select the radio button stating "All Results"
- Click on the Search button
Search 5:
You are unable to remember the name of the Asian American meteorologist who developed the scale to rate tornadoes
Solution:
- Click on the Person Search button located in the top navigation bar
- In the Biographical Facts section, choose "Meteoroligist" from Occupation list
- Select "Asian American" from Ethnicity List
Search 6:
A student wants to find overview articles on physics and physical science that deal with gravity
Solution:
- Click on the Advanced Search button located in the top navigation bar
- Type "physic*" into the first text box
- Choose Subject from the dropdown box
- Choose AND from the dropdown box
- Type "gravity" into the second text box
- Choose Subject from the dropdown box
- Choose Topic Overview from the Document Type dropdown box
- Click on the Search button to execute the search
Search 7:
Find all the articles from the August 1, 2003 issue of Popular Science magazine
Solution:
- Click on the Publication Search button located in the top navigation bar
- Type "popular science" into the Search box
- Click on the Search button
- Click on the link to Popular Science
- From the "Select Year" drop-down menu choose the year "2003"
- The 2003 Popular Science issues are displayed
Search 8:
Find articles to use in lesson plans to meet North Carolina standard Biology: 1.03
Solution:
- Click on the Science Standards button located in the top navigation bar
- Choose North Carolina from the state list
- Expand the standards twice until 1.03 appears
