The editor of this set deserves a medal for taking a major work last published in 1991 and editing, adding and shaping it into a format that is useable by high school students. The page layouts are very attractive with lots of white space, marginal notes, diagrams and decorative elements. Its prose has been edited for a high school audience, it is quite readable and it is likely to spark further investigation. Learning About the Holocaust is a revised and abridged version of the standard Encyclopedia of the Holocaust geared toward students in the 9th and 10th grades.  Out of approximately 900 entries in the original work, Smelser has kept just under 300. ... Many of the revisions consist of translation into English of German and other non-English terms.  These terms are included in the text in parentheses, but often are not indexed. ... Because of the above criticisms, high school and public libraries that do not already own it would be better off buying the Encyclopedia of the Holocaust.  It is a shame that the publisher opted to make a partial revision to this work rather than a full update.   -- ARBA (2002)
