UXL Civics supports middle school civics, economics, history, and U.S. government curricula in its three full-color, thematically arranged volumes. Volume 1: American Government covers the foundations and structures of local and state government as well as the three federal branches, the role of political parties and other entities that influence the government, and the intersection of government and the economy. Volume 2: Rights, Liberties, and Obligations addresses the meaning of citizenship and basic democratic values as well as the U.S. Constitution, citizens' civil rights and responsibilities, and the civil rights movement. Volume 3: U.S. Foreign Policy and Global Affairs provides an overview of its evolution over time, notes key players and institutions, describes military aid and intervention, intergovernmental agencies, and the role of the United States in the global economy and international humanitarian efforts.
Each chapter begins with guided reading questions to encourage critical thinking and includes suggestions for individual and group activities. Primary sources, full-color photos and graphics, and concise glossaries accompany the narrative and a comprehensive subject index and resource guide in each volume enhance access. The fourth volume is a Teacher's Guide with additional curriculum support.
UXL Civics: Teacher's Guide offers additional curriculum support in the form of bulleted lists summarizing the main ideas for each chapter; guided reading questions to encourage critical thinking; Common Core, state standards and national social studies standards alignments for each chapter; student activities and lesson plans for each chapter, including reading prompts, debate topics, and mock trial activities; and chapter-specific bibliographies.
