Deeply involved with the NAACP for a number of years, Daniel Ellis Byrd served as President and Organizer of the NAACP State Conference of Branches from 1939-1948 and served on a three-man team that investigated the blow torch lynching of John Jones in 1946.
Byrd assisted in many desegregation cases, the most prominent being Medgar Evers' fight to gain admittance to the University of Mississippi.
This collection consists primarily of correspondence; prominent correspondents include Martin Luther King, Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Roy Wilkins, and Medgar Evers. Also included are papers relating to the NAACP, such as activity reports, monthly reports, research material (of particular note is material related to Brown v. Board of Education), and documents relating to Louisiana teachers' organizations.
