This reviewer's test using a standard reading-level calculator indicated that all four volumes averaged a minimum 12th-grade reading level. This set covers topics from farming to religion to judicial review and laws. The maps are excellent and the entries include Web sties and resources. Because of the lower reading level, its usefulness at the high school level might be limited to younger sudents and less able reserachers.--Library Media Connection, October 2006

This four-volume reference work on early US history is designed to be accessible to high school students and general readers. It begins with 51 biographies, spread over the first two volumes, profiling key figures; numerous sidebars present additional information, b&w illustrations, a timeline, and a glossary of difficult words. In the following volume ten chapters deal primarily with political events, and five chapters discussing farming, religion, women’s roles in everyday life, black slaves and Native Americans, and the westward expansion of the United States. A fourth volume presents 18 primary source documents, including early ordinances, debates about the constitution, Washington's  Farewell Address  and other materials pertinent to foreign affairs, materials related to westward expansion, treaties with Native Americans, and materials illustrating issues of gender and race. Those familiar with other U-X-L Reference Library titles will not be disappointed in this new publication chronicling the birth of a new government from the end of the Revolutionary War to the drafting of a new Constitution. Excellent photos, maps, political cartoons, glossaries, source references and supplemental activities make this a good purchase for middle and high school history collections.  --PSLA, May 2007

All parts of the set contain identical 'Words to Know' and 'Timeline of Events' sections, which are very helpful.  Within the first pages of each of the almanac articles a sidebar provides related words with definitions.  This is a very nice feature for young readers who may not be fluent with using glossaries.  A very nice addition to the almanac is the research and activity ideas for the librarian teacher to use as assignments.  --ARBA, March 2007
