Overview
Agrobiodiversity and Farmers' Rights analyzes the impact of national and international legal system on agricultural biodiversity. In a teaching language that is accessible to non-experts, the book deals initially, the history of relations between men and cultivated plants and the concept of biodiversity, introducing readers to the topic. Subsequently, we analyzed the Seeds and Seedlings Law, the Plant Variety Protection Act, the Convention for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants, the FAO Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture and the Law on Access to Genetic Resources and Traditional Knowledge. This analysis is done from the point of view of its effects on the diversity of crop species, genetic and agro-ecosystems, and on the traditional family and agroecological farmers. At the end, the book proposes new legal instruments for the protection and enhancement of agricultural biodiversity and the implementation of farmers' rights. Agrobiodiversity is treated as a biological and cultural heritage, and the book shows how the legal instruments can support initiatives to promote environmental and social sustainability of agricultural systems.
